On the 31st of October 1942 Elba S. Walker and his friend Wilson Douglas Watson signed up for service in the USMC. He was sent to Camp Pendleton in San Diego for training and was then shipped out to Auckland, New Zealand. He fought in and earned 3 Battle Stars in Bouganville, Iwo Jima and Guam. He was also in the Floating Reserves. The ship they were sent out on was the USS Mount Vernon and his unit was one of the first to reach Iwo. His unit was the Third Marine Division, Ninth Regiment,(The Striking Ninth), Headquarters Company, Second Battalion. His Regimental Commander was Col. Howard Kenyon and the Commanding Officer was Maj. Gen. ** Graves B. Erskine. Elba was a mortarman and after the war was sent to Birmington, Washington where he was honorably discharged on the 23rd of April, 1945.
In 1992 he suffered a stroke and was put in Claremore Veteran's Center a few years after that. That is where he died of congestive heart failure in July 1997. He is buried in Vernon Cemetery in Coweta, Oklahoma, which is where he spent the majority of his life.
